University Fair 2018

At the first Island School Sha Tin University Fair students and parents met with representatives from 84 universities worldwide on 19 September 2018. They networked with admissions officers, found out what different universities have to offer and researched higher education options.

There were 3 seminar sessions, How to build an winning art portfolio, Studying Medicine in the UK and Multi Mini Interviews, Studying Engineering in the UK.

Mallika Laul (13F) said, “I found the medical talk very informative as a medicine applicant, as it shed light on vital aspects of medical admissions that I had not encountered before, such as exactly how different universities use the admissions test scores in their selection process. I am certain that this will aid me in my upcoming application to medical school.”

Haruki Saegusa (13R) attended the Engineering in the UK talk, he said, “We heard about the role of engineering in the modern world, and how it is an important job that requires tremendous responsibility and teamwork. The speaker explained what specific subjects are often involved in engineering, and suggested courses to take at higher levels.

“The presenter detailed the types of engineering courses the University of Manchester offered, and the level of academic scores required to apply for them.”

Awing Lui, Higher Education Counsellor explained, “Year 12s and 13s prepared for the fair in tutor time before it started and we [HE staff] found that students were asking very focused and detailed questions. Students were also exploring countries or universities that they hadn’t considered before.”

“There was a good turnout from the Year 10 and 11 students, this [the university fair] really helps them to make their Post 16 subject choices.”

Bakhita Fung (13R)  said, “It was great to hear from admissions officers and alumni from all over the world, talking about their experiences and advice for applications. This has truly helped me in making my university choices and establishing connections beyond my time at Island School. Now I know more about financial aid, application requirements, and the way that courses are taught in my dream universities!”

Awing, “The fair was a huge success and I was delighted to see so many parents participating. The HE team is looking forward to seeing more students and parents attending HE events in the future. If you have any questions or comments about the fair, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me awing.lui@online.island.edu.hk.”
