Assistant Higher Education Counselor (Part time)

Responsibilities

This person will be primarily based at Island School Tai Wai and will have a key focus on the middle school years (years 8-11)

Key responsibilities for this role include:
• Working within the HE and Careers Team and cross-phase project teams to help meet the departments and school’s strategic objectives
• Assisting in the development of and growing the careers education programme for middle years students at Island School
• Under the guidance of the Head of Careers, collaborating on Foundation-wide development of careers resources and programming
• Working with team to coordinate with parents, alumni, and the wider community, to create mentoring opportunities, internships, work-shadowing and career experiences
• Assisting in organizing visits to careers events outside school, including working in collaboration with the ISPTA on the careers fair
• Developing and maintaining contacts with industry and maintaining knowledge of HE institutions and their prerequisite requirements
• Assisting with and conducting guidance interviews, careers assessments, testing and self-exploration surveys with students, advising students on appropriate choices, providing guidance to students to help them develop their career goals and prepare for senior school and subsequent university applications
• As part of the HE & Careers team, assisting in conducting group sessions and workshops in school to students, parents and staff and taking responsibility for presentations on agreed topics
• Taking part in careers events within school and those which may take place after school hours
• Publicising and promoting the resources, advice and guidance available to students in the school
• Maintaining Careers & HE Guidance resources at Island School Tai Wai
• Attending and participating in departmental meetings and professional development opportunities as appropriate
• Forging good relations with pastoral, teaching and support staff
• Attending school meetings as required

• A Bachelors degree in education or psychology or a careers related discipline
(A careers-related educational credentials is an advantage)
• Previous experience in a careers counselling or advisory role desirable
• Excellent spoken and written English language ability

Abilities
• ICT skills, written and verbal communication and personal skills, high level of personal organisation, ability to work as a team; ability to use initiative; ability to recognise the need for ongoing professional development
Inter-personal communication skills, listening skills; flexibility to respond to changing situations; ability to work under pressure; team-working skills; attention to detail

Knowledge
• Knowledge of IB programmes, including the IB Diploma Programme and IB Careers Programme, is an asset
• ICT applications; knowledge of careers assessments

Applicants must be a permanent Hong Kong resident or possess a valid visa to work in Hong Kong.
