Teacher of English as an Additional Language

Island School is looking to appoint an experienced educator to fill the position of EAL Teacher, to commence in August 2020. This new role, initially for 1-year, is being established to support a new admissions pathway to the school allowing students from a broader range of language backgrounds to join. The new role involves taking responsibility for a group of around 10-20 Year 9, 10 and 11 students as they embark on their journey with the school to gain English language proficiency through intensive and personalised support. The role will be supported by the further employment of a full-time EAL Educational Assistant.

Job Summary

The main role of the classroom teacher is to maximise student learning and development through the planning, preparation and teaching of programmes to meet students’ individual learning needs and achieve specific outcomes. Teachers teach a range of student abilities and classes and are accountable for the effective delivery of their programmes. The classroom teacher engages in critical reflection in order to improve their knowledge and skills to better engage students and improve their learning. Classroom teachers assume roles beyond the classroom in endeavouring to maximise students’ learning. These roles include working collaboratively with colleagues and other members of the school community, and communicating with parents and care-givers. The teacher’s contribution to our school goes beyond the classroom. It’s expected that they participate in the development of school policies and programmes to assist in the implementation of school priorities. All teachers may be required to undertake other duties in addition to their teaching duties.

Requirements

Minimum typical education

Bachelor Degree in Education, or Bachelor Degree in any subject with PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education), or equivalent. All applicants are expected to have a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the teaching of the EAL pedagogy and current global best practice in this teaching area.

Minimum typical experience

1-3 years’ teaching experience within a recognised educational organisation.
