Message from the Head Students
WELCOME BACK TO ISLAND SCHOOL!
Hi Islanders! We are your Head Students, Hannah Wu, Airi Tachino, Ray Yao and Hannah Lee. We hope you have had an enjoyable and restful summer break and are now ready to begin the new term! This week, we are celebrating the first anniversary of our return to Borrett Road and the beginning of a new academic year – we hope you all had fun at the whole school singalong on the courtyard on Thursday!
Last year, having come together on this campus, we embraced opportunities to bond across year levels and houses. The leaders who stepped up among us to organise social events and welcome new students played a big role in us finding our footing, bringing back the Island School Spirit to Borrett Road.
Now, it is our job as a school community to continue this legacy – to represent our school values, radiate a positive attitude, and to ultimately, try our best.
This year, our goal as head students is to further expand the domain of student voice and to elevate student agency, both within and beyond the student council. Here at Island School, student voice has been and will always continue to be one of our key priorities. We hope to do this by increasing student advocacy in projects across the school and encouraging more students to join the student council.
Coming up in Term 1: A Recap!
As we’ve announced on Wednesday’s whole school assembly, there are a lot of incredibly fun events, activities and opportunities coming up this term, which we hope you all will have a chance to join in and participate in.
Green Week: 4th-8th September
Organised by WANBO, the green team on the student council, our annual Green Week is coming back to remind everyone of the impact our waste has on the environment. Over the course of the week, WANBO will be organising activities such as a scrap paper drive, upcycling workshops, a food carton recycling inter-house and more. With that in mind, we hope students will begin saving up any leftover food cartons (Tetra-paks), whether white-backed or silver-backed, to be brought to school and recycled during the week to earn house points!
STARS
On October 3rd, Island School will once again host Stars in Their Eyes. STARS is an annual tradition, celebrating the diverse musical talents at IS. Students bravely perform individually or come together as groups, with the intention of delivering an unforgettable musical performance.
The finalists for this event have been decided, after going through a competitive audition program at the end of last school year. An incredible lineup has been assembled, ranging from touching solo acts to powerful orchestral ballads. Not to mention, throughout the show, the STARS orchestra and choir will complement our performers and the overall show.
Meraki
Island School is hosting its first iteration of the new sustainable fashion show fundraiser ‘Meraki’ . The student-led team has been working very hard on promotions and connections for this to happen and this is a very exciting opportunity for the school to come together and support this special fundraiser in November. Please keep an eye out for more information about casting, performances and event management on our instagram page or student bulletin – they will be looking to expand this team as there will be opportunities for students to cover all elements of CAS in this project. We can’t wait to see more students get involved with such a creative and sustainable student initiative!
Middle Phase Production – Seussified Christmas Carol
Aside from STARS, this year there is one more opportunity to be part of a school production. Years 7 – 10 have an opportunity to be part of a Seussified Christmas Carol, a show where Green Eggs and Ham meets Charles Dickens!!! Ms. Kawano and Ms. Lacey-Vittachi will be holding auditions next week, on August 29th (Tuesday) and 30th (Wednesday) at lunchtime in Room 214. More updates about this production may come, so stay tuned!
Student Initiative Leadership Open Meeting
Over the past year, our student council and associated student initiatives have been going through a streamlining process to solidify our student governance structure. Through this, we hope to connect all ongoing student initiatives, outside of CAS and Global Perspective Projects, with student council teams. On the 28th of August, Monday Lunchtime, we will be holding an open meeting for all student leaders of student initiatives and student council Heads and Deputy Heads. If you are a student leader of an in-school initiative hoping to plan events or activities over the next year, we would like to extend an open invitation for you to join us in this meeting. More details will come, so please keep an eye out for more information about the meeting.
We hope you have an amazing and restful weekend ahead. Welcome back to school, Islanders!!
Happy first week back,
Hannah, Hannah, Ray and Airi
