Breaking the Bias: IWD 2022
The Island School community united in a sea of purple to celebrate International Women’s Day, on 8th March 8th, an annual celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women! Here at Island School, we strive to accelerate gender equality and empower women and girls around the world. With events such as our House name changes, International Women’s Day will be followed by Women’s Week, set to take place 14-18 March.
This week, the Social Action committee learned more about our new House names! For the past week, the six House names have changed to Dangarembga, Ebadi, Fry, Nanny, Ride and Wai-sze, all trailblazing women deserving of more recognition! Learn more about these incredible role models here. Furthermore, the committee considered the triumphs and challenges of women, as well as the importance of gender equity.
Women’s Week will also includes the HERstories Creative Showcase and whole-school workshops examining the evolution of the media’s portrayal of women through time. HERstories, themed “Break the Bias’ this year, will be showcased on Island Currents, Island School’s brand-new student news platform (www.islandcurrents.org). The workshops, set to take place on Friday, 18 March from 1–2pm, examine Disney tales and ‘Killing Us Softly 4’, a documentary. RSVP here.
Women’s Week is organised by Girls Rising, a branch of the Social Action Committee. Reach us using the contact methods below if you have any queries.
