Island School’s Green Week: Moving to ZERO WASTE 14th – 18th March 2016

Green Levy of $5 Plastic Cutlery and $3 on Paper Cups.
Island School’ s green group WANBO and school catering company Chartwells will be in partnership next week in a bid to reduce single-use plastics, one of the biggest hazards to marine life. From Tuesday 15th March – Friday 17th March there will be NO plastic cutlery offered free to customers. There will be no plastic lids, straws or paper cups on offer free for drinks. Students should bring their own cups, their own bottles for water and their own cutlery. Otherwise they can purchase these items at the proposed rate of $5 for cutlery and $3 for cups.

This year, WANBO have asked individual Houses to create their own awareness raising initiatives for Green Week. Each form group within each House has been encouraged to make 3 Pledges towards being Green! Da Vinci and Einstein are doing their own waste audit on Thursday; Fleming House has made recycling notices for every teaching room in the school; Nansen will have an ocean awareness bake sale, while Rutherford are campaigning for greater Green awareness and Wilberforce are doing a recycling art competition throughout the week.
Meanwhile, there are other Green events happening throughout the week. On Monday we will have our Green assembly, Tuesday through Friday there are Youtube focus messages delivered during registration, such as this video.

We also have our Earth Hour on Tuesday during lesson 4 – we will all reduce our consumption of electricity. On Wednesday everyone is invited to dress green. On Thursday, our gardening group will launch their plant sponsorship event and on Friday Mr Ross Burroughs will do a presentation on the Masarang Foundation.
