Green Week Review
Introduction:
“Happy Green Week — now is the time to take action!” This chant was heard all around the Island School campus during Green Week — WANBO’s official annual initiative that took place this year from the 13th to the 17th of March.
Reflection over the initiatives:
We were proud to introduce one of our brand new Upcycling workshops that occurred during lunch break in the courtyard. This ranged from creating origami turtles using waste paper, making sea-glass necklaces using sea glass collected from beaches, and upcycling egg cartons, from egg cartons which were kindly supplied by our amazing food tech department! These were all a massive success, especially the sea-glass necklaces which were kindly donated by Ms Marmagne who runs the Upcycling club in Island School. Ms Marmagne said, “Everybody was really enthusiastic and we created some amazing jewellery using the imagination and creativity skills of recycling old pieces of glass into personal treasures.”
In addition to this, we had our yearly tradition of the food carton interhouse. As of this newsletter being published, the inter house will have ended but that doesn’t mean you can’t continue donating Food Cartons! Members of WANBO highly recommend that you too continue bringing them to school and recycling them in the orange bin found in the recycling hub. Which will all be dropped off to Mil Mil, the charity that we’ll be donating all the food cartons that’ve been collected over the past few weeks. Sadly, it will be closing by the end of the year and we’re glad that we were able to create a sustainable impact by collecting food cartons for Mil Mil. Interhouse points will be awarded based on the number of food cartons collected from each house.
Timothy from 10D said, “This event well-exhibits how the optimism and determination of the school community can work together towards a common good; regardless of flaws and successes, strengths and weaknesses, it has shown how each and every one of us can make a difference.”
Asia Pacific Catering has graciously agreed to collaborate with us on our sustainable initiative of Bring Your Own Cup. Students can bring their own cup to purchase 10 drinks and get a drink under $30 for free. This event will continue on until Easter!
Furthermore, our members presented the harms of the meat and fishing industry in the form of a sharing from Jayden and Nicholas in the courtyard with posters. We even introduced a Quizizz and we saw enthusiastic participation and engagement from all students and staff members! We also had two environmental movie screenings in the courtyard where students sat down to enjoy some footage of animals.
Conclusion & Promotions:
These fun activities were held successfully over the span of a week and we would like to thank Ms Coulson and Mr Burrough for guiding the team. Our gratitude must be expressed to the WANBO team and heads, who have worked tirelessly to bring you this event. Lastly, we are extremely thankful for the unfailing support of the Island School community for making this all possible.
