Students Triumph at The World Scholar’s Cup (Hong Kong Round)

A delegation of 57 students represented Island School at the Hong Kong regional round of the World Scholar’s Cup on 9-10 March, 2019, amassing 14 trophies and 323 medals.

The World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) is a competition that connects students from many different cultures, fostering a love of learning as well as lifelong bonds between like minded people. Hong Kong hosts a regional round every year, from which students can qualify to attend Global Rounds in cities across four continents over the summer – to ultimately compete in the Tournament of Champions (ToC) at Yale University. Each year, students study a curriculum of six subjects – Arts, Literature, History, Science, Social Studies and Special Area. In each round, in accordance with the curriculum, students engage in academic events such as writing, debating, an individual quiz (Scholar’s Challenge) and a team quiz (Scholar’s Bowl). They also meet fellow scholars from all over the world at the Scholar’s Ball and Cultural Fair.

All teams qualified for the Global Round held in Beijing in June. Below are some notable achievements from the teams:

Anya Saunders, Catherine Choi and Toto Yuen successfully defending their title as the overall champion team in the Senior division, placing 1st in the Challenge and Bowl events, as well as 3rd in Debate.

Rachael Adams, Nicole Tam (11W) and Chloe Law (11D) won 1st place in Debate in the Senior division – Rachael was also selected for the Debate showcase to display her prowess as the 1st place Debater, while Nicole placed 4th overall individually.

Jasper Ma (12E), Matthew Cheng (12R) and Samuel Leenknegt (12D) won 5th place in the Team Writing event, with Samuel also attaining the highest score in the Senior division for the Science Challenge.

First-time scholar Ady Lam (9E) emerged as the overall individual champion and highest scorer in the Challenge of the Junior division – along with her teammates Nicole Yuen and Chelsea Tse (9W), the team placed 2nd overall.

Charlie Lam (9E) was the 2nd-runner up in the Junior Division.

The Island School delegation would like to thank Ms Eves and Mr Nason for their unwavering support through every step of this journey. It is only with their support and enthusiasm that we enjoy each WSC experience to the fullest, and succeed to the extent that we do each season.
