Winter Gala 2018
Island School’s first Winter Gala, held at the Sha Tin Wai campus, raised over $40,000 for the Nicola Myers Kenneth McBride Memorial Fund on the 7 December 2018. Students, parents and staff all came together to celebrate the season, with lots of Christmas entertainment, food, face-painting, card and cookie decorating.
The Gala was organised by the Head Students and both the old and new Student Union teams and involved over 100 students as volunteers, entertainers, running games and selling tickets. With support from staff, PTA and parent volunteers on the night, their efforts brought together nearly 700 members of our Island School and Sha Tin community. Although money is still being counted, approximately $40,000 has been raised. All proceeds will go to the Nicola Myers Kenneth McBride Memorial Fund, a charity dedicated to providing academically driven but financially limited Hong Kong students with support for their education. The grants awarded to students are used to pay for exam fees, tutoring, books or sometimes basic living costs such as food or transport.
Rebecca Lucas-Timpany, Higher Education Counselor and the staff member who supported the student event organisers said, “It was a wonderful evening. The students put a lot of thought into the design of the Gala and tremendous energy into their volunteering. The energy on the evening was very festive and people’s contributions, large and small made for a wonderful event that truly supported the school’s Nicola Myers Kenneth McBride fundraising and helped us go a significant way towards meeting our target for the number of bursaries we would like to be able to give out this year.”
