WANBO’s Redress Collection Drive

Although the new school term has just started, WANBO has been hard at work! Having begun whole school endeavours for the first time since coming back on Borrett, our team is actively trying to make Island School a more environmentally friendly community by implementing a range of engaging activities, to let the Island School community learn more about the world around us.

As October approaches us, we have began our Redress Collection Drive initiative—of which encompasses the following below:

Redress Assembly

This Tuesday, we were very grateful to have Ms. Charly Cheung, the Circular Fashion Project Officer from Redress (an environmental NGO that aims to reduce fashion waste) to talk about the significance of fast fashion pollution in Hong Kong. Charly spoke to the student body about the severity of fashion waste and its devastating impacts on the environment, hence how collecting unwanted clothing can mitigate the issue. It is estimated that 170 tonnes of fashion waste are sent to HK’s landfill daily, which is equivalent to 1 blue whale, 25 African elephants, and approximately 2179 Mr. Burroughs!

Redress mainly works in 3 stages: Design, Consumer and End-of-life, taking a holistic approach in minimising fashion’s impact, and driving a sustainable future for fashion. Their ultimate goal is to eliminate waste, and have clothes and resources be recirculated through resale, repair, reuse and recycling.

Please find the slides from the assembly here

Redress Clothing Drive

It’s time to get your family involved in this inter-house event! From now until the 14th of October, gather any clothes that you/your family doesn’t need, and bring them to school! Boxes will be placed outside your house office for you to drop your unwanted clothes in, and they will be sorted to be sold at the Charity Bazaar on the 26th of October! Each piece of clothing donated will add one point to your house! There are some guidelines for you to follow as to what to/not to put in (please see the information below), but most importantly please make sure that the clothing that you donate is clean

Please do not donate the following items:

  • Shoes
  • Paper/plastic bags
  • School/Work uniforms
  • Home textiles
  • Mouldy clothing

Redress Charity Bazaar

Here are some details for the upcoming Redress Charity Bazaar:

  • Date: October 12th 2022
  • Time: Lunch break (12:45-13:40)
  • Location: School courtyard (G/F)

Remember that all donated goods will be sold to as low as $10, so make sure to come as early as you can to purchase the best pieces! All remaining clothes and proceeds will be given to Redress.

WANBO Recycling Bins

The WANBO team has also been busy placing paper recycling bins around the campus on the 22nd of September. Please note that the recycling bins are specifically for paper only, so please pay attention when you do decide to recycle general waste materials!

*Tetra Packs cannot be recycled.*
