The Vertical Challenge, A Gardening Project

Students and staff from Ng Yuk Secondary School (NYSS) and Island School are coming together to create a vertical green wall in the community garden at the Tai Wai Campus.

Students Sam Hui, Om Loke, Sean Wai and Sean Lee, supported by Head of Geography Mr Howard Davis and Horticulturist Paul Melsom, started the project in collaboration with students and staff from NYSS. After constructing the vertical framework near the community library, the group have been creating a mixed planting scheme which aims to provide a colourful and calming aesthetic to the community space.

“This has been an absolutely rewarding experience for me and my other team members, as we get to contribute to the school and engage with the surrounding community. It has really developed our creativity and critical thinking skills. Our team’s Explorations Community Project was based on the concept of ‘Integrating Communities through innovative projects that improve the environment’ and I believe we have definitely accomplished that.”, said Sam Hui (9W).

Mr Davis said, “We hope that the project serves to enhance the environment of our campus and we will be able to develop more projects of this nature in the future.”
