Update on Food Carton Recycling & Recycling Services

A brief update on Island School’s general and food carton recycling services.

Tetra Pak Recycling:

Thank you, Island School, for your enthusiastic and continued support during our 2023 Green Week Tetra Pak Recycling Inter-house competition! We managed to collect close to 2000 Tetra paks over two weeks!

As you all may know, we send our recyclable Tetra Paks to Mil Mill, one of Hong Kong’s only food carton recycling facilities. Unfortunately, they will be ceasing operations in June. However, this doesn’t mean we can’t stop recycling our food cartons! We would like the Island School community to continue supporting Mil Mill until the very end, so please recycle your food and beverage cartons at the orange bins stationed in the car park recycling hub on LG1.

Please refer to this video or this leaflet for instructions on how to properly wash and cut the packages before recycling. Scissors will be provided at the recycling bins, and the nearest bathroom is located outside the Senior Learning Hub. We would also like to note that those bins only accept clean food and beverage cartons/Tetra Paks, such as packed drinks sold at the Island Deli/Express, milk cartons, juice boxes and soup boxes. Cardboard boxes should be recycled in the blue bins in the recycling hub or the paper recycling bins in classrooms.

Recycling Hub:

Over the past academic year, WANBO has collaborated with the school to establish the Island School Recycling Hub! It is located in front of the car park stairs leading up to LG1. We currently accept the following recyclables in the specified bins:

Plastic* — Red

Metal* —  Yellow

Paper — Blue

Glass* — Green

Tetra Pak — Orange

*Please rinse plastic/glass bottles and metal cans before recycling.

You can also find paper, plastic and metal recycling bins around campus and in classrooms.
