Lessons in Landfill
The Urban Survival Elements course last week visited Hong Kongs’ rapidly filling up South East New Territories Landfill at Tsueng Kwan O- due to be full by 2019.
Students learned about how waste is processed and managed in Hong Kong and considered some of the weaknesses in our materials systems. The students commented on how interesting the size and scale of the operation and just how many refuse trucks were entering the site.
Urban Survival Teacher Howard Davis said, “It is important for students to see where our waste goes first hand and to consider what our society can do about the problem.”
Students will follow up the trip with a team debate relating to the future of waste management in our city.
