Island School Welcomes Women in STEM
Wednesday 18th January saw the very first Girls Rising x Sciences Women in STEM talk. We welcomed four amazing women making a difference in their STEM fields to the Performance Space to talk to our students about their experiences studying and working in fields traditionally associated with men. These women are proactive in changing that and it was both fascinating and inspiring to hear their stories and their passion for working in STEM.
Island School alumni Tiffany Ma, a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Oxford, joined via Zoom from London. Iolanthe Yun Lan, a research scientist at the Centre for Immunology & Infection at HKUSTP; and Michelle Ng, a British-qualified medical doctor, certified lactation counsellor and postpartum doula, as well as the director of The Family Zone; are both working locally and spoke to an audience of students and staff in the Performance Space. Arlin Otto, a structural engineer, joined the event in person all the way from Canada where she is based.
Girls Rising hope to build on the success of this event with similar talks in the future. Members of the Island School community, please contact gillian.coull@online.edu.edu.hk if you or anyone you know is interested in speaking.
