Book Week in Words and Pictures.
Book Week at Island School 29th Feb -4th March 2016 has been a literary fest with competitions, conversations and costumes! The week kicked off with the Year 7 and 8 Battle of the Books competitions in which teams of six have to answer 12 questions that could be from any of the ten books on a set reading list. Einstein’s Year 7 and 8 teams were named champions.
Wilberforce House teams won the Junior and Senior tutorial quizzes! On a hunt to discover a good book students were invited to scan the QR codes on posters around school to hear teachers recommend their favourite book. Students were also encouraged to post photos of themselves reading in interesting or unusual locations. Please follow ‘islandschoolenglish’ on Instagram to see the best of these.
On Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime students from all years swarmed tables of books wrapped in newspaper at a $1 blind book sale run by the IS Student Union.
The week also saw the launch of junior book club, reading Wonder by RJ Palacio, and a meeting of the well-established senior book club. There were mixed opinions of this month’s book, ‘All The Light We Can Not See’ a story of survival in World War II. Next month’s book will be ‘When Breath Becomes Air’.
On Friday staff and students, became heroes, villains and ……wardrobes as they dressed as literary characters!
Teacher of English and Book Week coordinator Danny Nason said; “It has been such a great week. Reading has always been a lifelong friend and teacher for me and I would not be who I am today without the books I read growing up; it has been brilliant to share this passion and see students enjoying the book-themed activities this week. It is all too easy these days to login to social media, download a new game app or procrastinate on YouTube and we hope that this week has encouraged some students to pick up and enjoy a great book!” #isbookweek2016
