English Committee launched!

The start of Term 3 brought fresh, exciting news as the English faculty launched a brand new platform, the English Committee, for all things English.

The Committee aims to integrate English-related projects as preparation for the school’s much-anticipated return to Borrett Roa,  to enhance student agency for English learners and promote the discretionary learning approach in the English curriculum.

“This is a fantastic and unique opportunity for students to demonstrate their passion for English and beyond, honing their leadership and organisational skills, whilst liaising with the English faculty as a whole,” commented Joseph Lau (12D) and Sean Lee (12N), Co-Chairs of the English Committee.

Mr Gary Corlett, Head of English: “The English Committee is a tremendous example of how the Island school community works together for the benefit of all students. This committee will provide leadership opportunities for students to support each other in English and create a launchpad for exciting activities that support both our Discretionary and Accredited English curriculum. I am really proud of our students for taking the initiative and for being an example of that great Island school spirit.”

Island School’s English Committee will be involved with organising a wide range of activities and events this term, including this year’s annual Book Week Celebrations. The list below shows the literary dress-up themes for each House during Book Week:

  • Sci-Fi & Fantasy – Da Vinci
  • Thriller, Gothic & Horror – Einstein
  • Classical Literary & Historical Fiction – Fleming
  • Myths & Legends – Nansen
  • Comics (ie. Marvel) – Rutherford
  • Anime & Manga – Wilberforce

Other initiatives such as Monthly Guest Speaker Programs, English Inter-Year Buddy Support Systems (TBC) and DIVE Publications will also be carried out – please read the slides here for more information. In addition, a Book Week Celebrations promotion video will be released next week as well, so stay tuned!

The Committee is open to everyone, so if you would like to get involved in the English Committee, simply fill in this form with the relevant information and select which sub-committee you would like to take part in. More information will then be provided to you regarding the events.
