Charlie Lam shortlisted for SCMP Student of the Year Awards 2021-22
Congratulations to Charlie Lam (13E) for being shortlisted for the South China Morning Post Student of the Year Awards 2021-2022, Linguist category.
This category is for students who have achieved a high level of proficiency in English, Cantonese or Putonghua. The judges look for precision and originality in the use of language. This year’s nominees were asked to submit a personal reflection to show the power of language by demonstrating how they have taught, helped or inspired others in their community.
“Year 9 English lessons opened my eyes to the versatility of language, and how it can be effectively used to make a memorable impact. Since then, I have cultivated my language skills to express, persuade and connect — I find sharing my views with people in Hong Kong and beyond incredibly gratifying,” said Charlie when asked how has studying languages changed her.
“Island School has a strong community of dedicated linguists. We have a long-standing culture of mentoring younger students, training for competitions and inspiring one another to reach greater heights! I fondly remember intense debates with my peers, and feeling energised by our collective passion for expression. Thank you to Mr. Hood and Ms. McPhee for supervising Debate & Public Speaking club and Model UN club respectively, and thank you very much to Ms. Eves for deepening my appreciation of the English language and endorsing me for the award, I am truly grateful for their support and guidance over the years,” said Charlie.
