ISLMUN 2.0

On the 25th and 26th of November, Island School hosted the second iteration of its Model United Nations conference, known as ISLMUN 2.0, accommodating the U.S. Consulate General Gregory May as an honored guest speaker.

Model United Nations (MUN) is an activity in which students assume the role of delegates and represent countries on various topics. Here, individuals can hone their public speaking and critical thinking skills by engaging in diplomatic discussions and debates, as well as conducting in-depth research ahead of a conference, where everyone convenes to simulate a committee from the real United Nations. Special thanks go to Mr. Lawrence Wong, Ms. Hilary Hu and Mr. Tony Chan and their teams for ensuring the smooth running of this event.

This year, with over 200 individuals in attendance, comprised of Admin, Chairs, Delegates, Teacher supervisors, and our respected Secretariat led by Alexandra Lai 12W (Secretary-General) and Cyrus Ng 12F (Deputy Secretary-General), ISLMUN 2.0 brought together like-minded students from over 12 different international and local schools with the common goal of improving these skills and enjoying the culture rooted in. Accommodating classic UN committees such as the General Assembly and Security Council, as well as others such as the House of Commons and North Atlantic Treaty Organization, this conference saw fruitful discussions on topics ranging from ‘Balancing freedom of speech with the moderation of content in North Korean media’ to ‘The Mukden Incident’.

Those wishing to join this lovely community within our school are more than welcome to do so via signups on SchoolsBuddy. Thank you to all those who participated and supported ISLMUN 2.0 over the past few months—we hope to see you again next year!
