Bring your own cup Initiative
Introduction:
In light of Green Week, Island School introduces a brand new initiative, courtesy of a joint initiative led by WANBO & Asia Pacific Catering, our school’s catering company! After speaking to the Catering Company & reaching an agreement – students from now and the future can bring their own cups to Island Café to purchase their favourite drinks without the need of the plastic cup!
Promotions:
This year, to promote the event, we’ve also worked with our catering company so that from now till the end of term, every 10 drinks purchased through your own cup will give you a free drink! Similar to a redemption voucher, we’ll be doing this through a stamp system which will be tabulated by the servers found in the café area!
Please do note that the free drink must be $30 or below for the stamp card to cover it, as there is a week left of school remaining now is the chance to start collecting stamps and start the transition over to bringing your own cup rather than using plastic cups!
Background Information:
Plastic cups on average take up to 450 to 1000 years to decompose completely under the Earth’s surface. With the rate that we are throwing away plastic in general, this leads to beaches being polluted, and when the plastic burns, it releases toxic gas into the atmosphere, harming nearby communities and ecosystems. Let’s do our part and reduce the amount of toxic emissions into our atmosphere!
Let’s do this together:
In the past, WANBO was the Student group responsible for enforcing change and sustainable growth in our school’s grounds. However this year, we want to take a different approach and that’s through our collaboration with the Island School communities, the ones who made these changes possible. Let’s hear some student input!
A student from Da Vinci house said “I like how we’re able to gain rewards by using our own containers to buy drinks!”
Another anonymous student said “The free drink system for using our own containers is really encouraging us to use our own containers and help the environment.”
The Bring Your Own Cup initiative has been a great success, with more and more people bringing their own cups, bottles and containers. We are quite aware that some students and teachers have already gotten into the practice before we launched this program, but it’s amazing that more and more Islanders have been following suit!
Conclusion & Promotions:
Thank you, Islanders! We hope to be re-running this practice again! WANBO would heavily appreciate it if you continue bringing your own beverage containers long after this event is over. Let’s continue to make our Borrett campus as green and eco-friendly as it can be!
