Student Ranks Top in Canadian Senior Maths Contest
Competing in the Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest, Timmy Liu (12W) placed in the top 25% of contestants and won a Distinction certificate. He was among one of the 9900 contestants from all over the world who took part in the contest organised by the University of Waterloo.
The CSM Contest consists of 9 questions that tests students’ understanding of various mathematical content studied and their problem-solving skills, over a 2-hour period.
Timmy said: “The contest, in my opinion, is different from conventional maths tests that rely mostly on memorization. Although knowing the concepts is crucial in being able to tackle the problems, what is more important is the ability to analyze complex problems, dissect them, and think critically in an attempt to find the solution.”
“Through this experience, I have gained confidence in my own mathematical skills and ability to solve difficult problems. There is a great feeling of accomplishment in working out the solutions, especially for challenging questions where you initially feel intimidated.”
“I am honored to receive this certificate, and I want to express my gratitude to my teachers for their dedication to teaching and continuous encouragement.”
