Island School’s temporary home in Sha Tin Wai and Tai Wai has enabled us to make new community partners with the students from Christ College and Ng Yuk Secondary Schools. A number of English Language projects across everything from ‘STEM’ subjects to Art, Music and Drama have come about as a result.
“The students benefit as they learn, not only their own language, but also how to engage with others in a meaningful way in order to communicate their intended message. They have had to change their delivery as they adapt to meet the needs of the listener. This is a skill that they will be able to use, not just in school, but also in later life.”
Ng Yuk Secondary School NET Teacher
‘Writers Block’, now in its second year, is a great example of peer-to-peer teaching in collaboration with Ng Yuk Secondary School. 18 students from Years 9 – 12 run weekly session that give the NYSS students an opportunity to practise their English in an informal setting. With three classes covering 80 pupils, our students create the resources and are the sole deliverers of the content, working one to one, or in small groups of up to three NYSS students. At the end if the first year they wrote and published 20 children’s books which are available in our Community Library at Tai Wai.
These activities are all very cost effective, however, materials, administration, supervision, and travel all add up.
We are looking for both programme and individual project partners for both financial and ‘in kind’ support and are happy to discuss naming rights. Contact alliance@online.island.edu.hk if you can help.
