Students Pick Up Gold and Silver at World Scholar’s Cup

At the World Scholar’s Cup all ten Island School teams qualified for the global round in Hanoi, with the junior team placing second overall, and Dylan Ngan named best overall debater, on the 4-5 March 2017.

For this year’s competition, we had to research various topics from six subjects (science, history, social studies, the arts, literature, and a special area on mythology) all related to the theme: An Unlikely World. Using this knowledge, we embarked on a weekend program of intense debates, individual quizzes (the Scholar’s Challenge), a team quiz (the Scholar’s Bowl), and a collaborative essay writing task.

There were also various fun events to help us meet other scholars and get settled in. On the second day, there was a debate showcase where the top 8 debaters from various schools got to show off their skills (including Island School’s own Dylan Ngan, who placed first overall in debating), and a talent show. Every scholar also got to take home their very own alpaca toy, since alpacas are the official mascots of the World Scholar’s Cup.

Island School’s scholars would like to thank Mr Spanos for organizing this event, and we’d also like to thank Mrs Hodson, Mrs Sommerville, Ms Eves, Mr Nason and Mr Jay for accompanying and supporting us.
