Supersonics DJ – Now That Is What I Call Music!

Music courses at Island School have been remixed and rebooted this term, so more students can find their rhythm! Supersonics DJ is a new Elements course which kicked off this week with students learning to DJ, remix and produce their own electronic music. As part of the course, students work with Sol Passion Music, Hong Kong’s leading DJ and Music Production school, where they learn from experienced instructors. In the classroom students learn how to craft their own dance music tracks using Launchpads and other new technology.

Student Sia Seth (11F) said, “DJing is very exciting because we were introduced to a lot of new techno music equipment. It was challenging but by the end of the lesson we were able to speed-up and slow down the tempo, develop our own sounds and filter in and out from one track to another.”

“I really hope to DJ to a crowd by the end of the course!”

The well-established “Now That’s What I Call Music” course now has three visiting instrumental tutors who are delivering group tuition on the ukulele, guitar and drums. Greg Taffs (10R) said, “My first guitar lesson was fun, we learnt a lot in a short amount of time.” “We were reading tabs and strumming through covers of songs we knew!”

Emmanuel De Riu 9D said, “The three hours flew by as the three teachers were friendly and helpful. The biggest drumming challenge was getting my foot in time with the beat. I want to be a decent guitarist too which is why I took this course!”

The Music department’s talent show Stars In Their Eyes is now in the final stages of rehearsals with the live show on the 26 September 2017.

Natascha Netz 9W winner of Stars In Their Eyes 2016 said, “I really love singing the Bruno Mars track “Just The Way You Are” which we are singing as a full choir.”
