Students and Staff raise $1million for Charity Summerbridge

Raising $1 million for charity Summerbridge, teams of students and staff, plus 300 supporters, completed a Walkathon that started and finished at Island School on Sunday 28th Feb 2016.

For nearly 25 year Summerbridge has been providing ‘life changing’ educational experiences for young people in Hong Kong. Each summer 300 financially challenged students from local schools gather at Island School and at other schools, where they follow a programme in English to improve their confidence, communication and collaboration skills. The teachers themselves are students, some from universities and colleges and some from secondary schools. Island School students who have spent their summers as Summerbridge teachers describe the experience as, ‘Just as valuable for them as for the Summerbridge students.’

All the costs of running Summerbridge come from donations and fundraising events such as the Walkathon.  Committee Chairman and Island School Principal Chris Binge, announce that the event had reached its ambitious target of raising more than HKD1 million. He said; “We were rewarded by wonderful weather on our walk along Bowen Road and back. We were enlivened at each end by the drum music from band Salvage, and the inspiring speech of the Honorary Patron of Summerbridge Cathy Lee (the wife of property tycoon Martin Lee).”WalkathonGroupPic
